Villarreal’s Resilience Shines in Narrow Victory Against Betis Sevilla

After the slap received at the Vélodrome on Thursday (0-4), Villarreal got back on track at Betis Sevilla, not without difficulty (3-2). Trailing twice, Marcelino’s protégés drew on their resources, both physical and mental, to achieve a third success in a row in La Liga.

The show began at the half-hour mark when Betis midfielder Guido Rodriguez took advantage of a throw-in to score with a nice volley (1-0, 30th). Ten minutes later, Alex Baena equalized (1-1, 40th) but Villarreal still returned to the locker room leading the score, after Willian José’s goal to give Betis the advantage just before the break (2-1 , 45th+2). A counter-attack from Sokratis Papastathopoulos (2-2, 48th) put the two teams back on level terms, while Nabil Fekir missed the ball at 3-2 (61st).

Four yellow cards and two expulsions in one minute

Alexander Sorloth was quick to give the yellow submarine the advantage for the first time in the game (3-2, 67th). The match then took a turn for the worse when Alberto Moreno, already sent off against OM, left his partners prematurely again for a gross foul followed by a gesture of humor (70th).

He will be joined a few seconds later by his victim, Chimy Avila, warned a few seconds before and who will receive a second yellow in less than a minute for protest after Moreno’s tackle (70th). The altercation will make the end of the match choppy, with no real opportunity to get excited. Villarreal, 11th, will be content with this narrow success which allows it to take 13 points ahead of the relegation zone. And to regain a little confidence before attempting the feat against the Marseillais.
