VfB Stuttgart Fans Join Power Struggle in Bundesliga’s Top Three

The fans of VfB Stuttgart have joined in the power struggle in the third place in the Bundesliga.

“Members sold and betrayed – you have two weeks to correct this mistake,” read a banner that was shown in the guest block in the Bundesliga game at TSG Hoffenheim (3-0) on Saturday. It remained unclear who the banner was specifically aimed at.

The 54-year-old lawyer Tanja Gönner was elected to head the supervisory board last Tuesday, the former minister in Baden-Württemberg succeeded club president Claus Vogt.

Vogt is defending himself against being voted out, citing a promise made by former President Wolfgang Dietrich. As part of the spin-off of the professional division in 2017, he declared “that the elected president of the eV must also lead the control committee”.

The Swabians’ board called for calm and unity on Friday. The current situation at the club’s political level is “a particular burden on practically all levels and comes at an inopportune time,” it said in a statement.

The committee led by chairman Alexander Wehrle wants to work actively on the formal clarification of existing problems in a “compact working group”.
