After various meetings between the different parts that make up the structure of the Professional Basketball Super League, the format of competitions that this third edition of the competition will have was defined, which is scheduled to be officially inaugurated on May 1 and the participation of 18 teams. from different regions of the country.
In this new edition of the Venezuelan basketball spectacle competition, the SPB board and the owners or partners of the participating teams, it was defined that the format will have an eliminatory round of 24 games per team, which were distributed in two groups.
Group 1: Brilliants of Zulia, Broncos of Caracas, Frontinos of Táchira, Gladiators of Anzoátegui, Llaneros of Guárico, Pioneros of Ávila, Spartans of the Capital District, Bulls of Aragua and Trotamundos of Carabobo.
Group 2: Centaurs of Portuguesa, Crocodiles of Caracas, Devils of Miranda, Pipers of Zulia, Guaiqueríes of Margarita, Heroes of Falcón, Sailors of the East, Panthers of Miranda and Pirates of La Guaira.
Each team will face each rival in its group three times, one at home, another as a visitor and the third at the headquarters of the team that obtains the best average of points during the particular series. The four best in each group will be promoted to play in the postseason and the teams in positions five and six in each group will face each other in a “play-in” and the two winners of these series will also qualify for the next phase. .
The “play-in” series will be played for a maximum of two games at the headquarters of the team that finished in fifth place. The team that finished in sixth place must win two games to advance and the team that finished in fifth place will qualify for the next round by winning a single game.
It was also agreed in these meetings that before the start of the postseason a draft will be held in which the classified teams will be able to add a Creole player, as well as the replacement of an imported player, who will be obtained from the teams that are eliminated. Before the semifinals, a substitution of a local or imported player may be made, in the latter case not exceeding the quota of foreign reinforcements and also in the final another substitution from the teams eliminated in the previous rounds.
During the first phase of the postseason, five best-of-seven games will be played:
1st in Group 1 vs 5th in Group 2
1st in Group 2 vs 5th in Group 1
2nd in Group 1 vs 4th in Group 2
2nd in Group 2 vs 4th in Group 1
3rd in Group 1 vs 3rd in Group 2
The five winners will advance to the “Super Round”, the new postseason format where they will face each other in a round-robin of eight team matches. The two best qualifiers from the “Super Round” will compete in the SPB 2024 grand final in a seven-game series to win four.
