Upsets and Rain Delays Mark the Miami Open 2024 Road to the Final Rounds

The Miami Open 2024 is now beginning to look towards its final rounds. This Monday the round of 16 will be completed after a first few days marked by rain… and surprises.

Players of the stature of Rublev, Rune, Tsitsipas and Fritz are already out of the tournament. The first of them was Andrey Rublev, who fell on Friday by a double 6-4 against the Czech Tomas Machac, 60th in the ranking.

But the escabechina arrived this Saturday, on a chaotic day marked by rain which forced the game program to be delayed and caused some matches to end at dawn, and others to have to be postponed to Sunday.

The earliest risers when it came time to say goodbye were Tommy Paul (13)who retired due to injury after losing the first set (6-4) against Martin Damm, and Taylor Fritz (12), beaten in his debut by the Brazilian Thiago Seyboth Wild (n.76).

Also eliminated was the Argentine Tomas Etcheverry (n.30)who fell to Andy Murray (n.62), while Sebastián Báez (n.19) succumbed to Dominik Koepfer (6-3 and 6-2).

For Sunday there was the resounding defeat of Holger Rune, who was swept by Fabian Marozsan (6-1, 6-1) in a match to forget that shows that the Dane cannot find the point in a way that allows him to catch up with Carlos Alcaraz or Jannik Sinner.

The Spanish and the Italian are doing their best and are still in the competition. Sinner is already in the round of 16 after his suffered victory this Sunday against Tallon Griekspoorwhile Alcaraz will look for his pass this Monday (00:00h) against Gael Monfils.

The Indian Wells champion is the last Spanish representative at the Miami Open after the eliminations of his compatriots Alejandro Davidovich (28) and Martín Landaluce (360).

The American Ben Shelton (no. 17) defeated Landaluceonly 18 years old, in the second round 6-3 and 6-4, in one hour and 15 minutes

Despite the defeat, Landaluce, who had received an invitation from Miami, closed a very special week at the Florida tournament, where on Thursday he achieved his first victory on the ATP circuit, defeating fellow Spaniard Jaume Munar.

For its part, Davidovich said goodbye this Sunday after losing in the third round to the Norwegian Casper Ruud (n.8) by 6-3 and 6-4 in one hour and 36 minutes.

Ruud, a finalist in Miami in 2022 (he lost for the title against Alcaraz), will be Jarry’s next rival, who beat Thiago Seyboth Wild 6-7(1), 7-5 and 6-3 in a sharp duel of third round of two hours and 59 minutes that was experienced with great passion in the stands among the Chilean and Brazilian fans.

For its part, Chile had reasons for smiles but also for regrets since Nicolás Jarry (n.23) went to the second round after a marathon against the Brazilian Thiago Seyboth Wild (n.76) while Alejandro Tabilo (n.44) could not beat the Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov (n.12).

The other Chilean in competition, Tabilo put up a fight in his second round match but finally lost to Dimitrov by 6-7(5), 7-6(5) and 6-2 in two hours and 26 minutes.
