The Korea Badminton Association is an organization representing badminton sports organizations in Korea. It is an organization affiliated with the Korea Sports Council and is registered as a member of the World Badminton Federation. It was after liberation that badminton became popular in Korea. However, badminton at the time was in the nature of play, and competitive badminton was introduced in 1957 when the Korea Badminton Association was organized. Later, in 1962, the Badminton Association became an affiliate of the Korea Sports Council, and it was adopted as an official event at the 43rd National Sports Festival that year. The English name of the Korean Badminton Association is ‘Badminton Korea Association’. The World Badminton Federation is ‘Badminton World Federation’. In Korea, ‘Association’, meaning association, is used, whereas globally, ‘Federation’ is used, meaning federation. It is interpreted that Korean badminton uses the meaning of ‘Association’ as a smaller concept than ‘Federation’. Although federation and association appear to have similar meanings on the surface, there are some differences between the two. When many people hear the word ‘Federation’, they immediately think of the United States. The term ‘Association’ is a word commonly heard in small societies. According to the English dictionary, the origin of the word ‘federation’ is the Latin word ‘foederationem’, meaning togetherness, and came to be used in English in 1721 after passing through the French word ‘fédération’. The English word ‘federation’ is used together with the word ‘league’. In Japan, as Western culture was adopted after the Meiji Restoration, this word was translated into the Chinese character ‘federation’, which is a combination of ‘reunion (聯)’ and ‘oath (盟)’. It was created to mean a gathering of people who have pledged to do the same thing for a common purpose or goal. If you search the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, the word confederation appears only once. It appears in the article ‘Min Yeong-hwi raises an appeal and calls for the development of education’ on January 15, 1907, the 44th year of King Gojong’s reign. The Korean media has been using the term ‘federation’ since the Japanese colonial period. Since their inception in 1920, Chosun Ilbo and Dong-A Ilbo have reported on the names of organizations including the League of Nations, which was formed after World War I.

‘Association’ comes from the Latin word ‘associatio’, meaning to join together, and was established in English in the 16th century. The association, which is a combination of the words ‘couple to harmonize’ and ‘hoe to gather,’ is a non-profit organization, but in reality, it is often a for-profit organization. Unlike a federation, this means that rather than doing the same work, each person divides their roles and does what they can.

In the 1890s, American baseball referred to baseball games in leagues lower than the major league as ‘American Association.’ In Korea, under the influence of Japan, the term ‘association’ began to be used in earnest after the ‘Independence Association (獨立協會)’ was formed in 1896, led by Seo Jae-pil. The Annals of the Joseon Dynasty also shows that the word association appears later. However, since liberation, each sports organization in Korea uses the names association and federation, but there is essentially no significant difference between the two.

Among the official affiliated organizations of the Korea Sports Council, most sports organizations in popular sports such as soccer, baseball, basketball, volleyball, golf, and badminton use the word ‘association’. Organizations that use the word federation include track and field, swimming, weightlifting, shooting, canoeing, modern pentathlon, biathlon, ice skating, luge, roller sports, and mountaineering.
