Unforeseen Complications Arise at Gemini Clinic: Outbreak of Intraocular Inflammation Linked to Common Bacterium

According to the clinic, it has not yet been possible to find out what exactly was the cause. An exceptional event occurred in mid-February.

“After applying intraocular injections on Wednesday, February 14, approximately half of the patients developed complications in the form of intraocular inflammation after February 17,” Gemini clinic marketing manager Jiří Pernický told Novinkám.

“It was caused by the microbe Staphylococcus epidermidis, which is a common and not very aggressive bacterium that is a normal part of the human microflora,” he added.

The injections are administered to people suffering from age-related macular degeneration, which is a serious disease of the retina.

“As of today, all these patients have been discharged from the eye clinics, and some of them have already made an appointment for the next injection of medication at our clinic,” Pernický said.

“Every patient who undergoes an intraocular procedure, such as the application of intraocular injections or cataract removal, is exposed to the risk of intraocular infection, and unfortunately it cannot be completely avoided,” pointed out Pernický.

“In 20 years of applying intraocular injections to many thousands of patients at Gemini Eye Clinics, we have for the first time ever recorded multiple occurrences of infection, and this incident is thus completely unique at Gemini Clinic,” he added.

The clinic cooperates with the State Institute for Drug Control and the Regional Hygiene Station in Brno during the investigation of the case.

According to findings so far, the applied drug was sterile and was not infected with anything. “Furthermore, we carry out all necessary investigations to determine the cause and prevent it,” concluded Pernický.
