Unemployment rate drops to 2.5% in February – El Sol de México

In February, the unemployment rate in Mexico reached a level of 2.5 percent, the equivalent of a monthly reduction of 0.4 percentage points, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).

The figure reported by Inegi also represented its lowest level since March 2023, when the unemployment rate in the country was 2.4 percent.

When releasing the National Occupation and Employment Survey (ENOE), corresponding to February 2024, the Inegi stated that during this period at least 1.5 million Mexicans were unemployed, of which 829 thousand were men.

According to Inegi, four out of every 10 people in this segment of the population have been out of work for between one and three months, most of them between 25 and 44 years old.

He even highlighted that 9.4 percent of the entire unemployed population did not have completed secondary education. People with a higher level of education represented 90.6 percent.

On the other hand, the organization in charge of Graciela Márquez Colín reported that during the second month of 2024, approximately 59.4 million Mexicans had a job, 1.1 million more than in the same period last year.

Most of the employment was concentrated in the tertiary sector, related to services, commerce and tourism.

For analysts from Citibanamex and BBVA México, employment will be a determining factor in economic activity during the coming months, since as more people work, consumption will strengthen.
