Uncertain Future for Antwerp FC Coach Mark van Bommel: Time to Depart?

Antwerp FC qualified for the Champions’ Play-Offs last weekend. And in the meantime, the Great Old already has a ticket for his two consecutive cup finals. Nevertheless, the future of coach Mark van Bommel looks uncertain.

In the summer of 2022, the former midfielder of FC Barcelona and Bayern Munich, among others, was brought to the Bosuil by his compatriot and sporting boss Marc Overmars. RAFC took a certain risk with that appointment. After all, Van Bommel’s previous adventures as head coach had not proven to be an unqualified success.

From doubtful case to champion maker

But Overmars’ choice turned out to be the right one. The trainer quickly managed to mold a solid team, which at times played good football. And above all, a team that achieved results. Under his reign, Antwerp won the Croky Cup, after which it managed to win the national title a few months later.

In the summer, the Supercup was also added to the list of prizes. Antwerp then made its big debut in the Champions League. The results were worth seeing. And in the meantime, Van Bommel also managed to successfully launch several young talents.

Heavy savings with national champions

At the beginning of September, the Dutch trainer’s contract was terminated until mid-2026. But there is a real chance that Van Bommel will not terminate that agreement completely. In recent weeks, more and more rumors have emerged about the head coach’s departure in the summer.

With his achievements, Van Bommel will undoubtedly have put himself in the spotlight of several other clubs. According to Gazette of Antwerp However, the reason for his possible departure must mainly be sought within the savings at the Great Old. Arthur Vermeeren was forced to sell in January, and more strong players will probably follow in the summer.

Nothing to gain, a lot to lose

The resources to provide suitable replacement are limited. Moreover, Antwerp will not be able to count on the expertise of the suspended Overmars in its hunt for reinforcement. It therefore seems almost impossible for Van Bommel to match, let alone improve, the good results of his first two seasons. An extended stay could therefore damage his restored reputation again. Stopping at a high point, such as with a new cup win, therefore seems plausible.
