Ultras Arrested and Reported After Riots at Brindisi-Taranto Match

There are three of them ultras arrested and five those reported at the Brindisi Prosecutor’s Office for the riots that occurred last Sunday at the end of the match ToastsTaranto finished 0-2. This is the budget of a derby played at the “Franco Fanuzzi” stadium (valid for the 33rd day of the Serie C championship) which began in the stands with hostile chants and ended with the intervention of the police who, trying to avoid a direct clash between the two fans, seized to Taranto fans (while they were on board a Lancia Delta) 6 paper bombs and objects capable of offending, including a baseball bat, a PVC pipe, a wrench and an irregularly shaped stone. The inspection inside the vehicle was carried out by the Digos of Brindisi. The three arrested in flagrante delicto are all from Taranto and already subjected to Daspo, an administrative measure applied to subjects reported for having caused or participated in disturbances during sporting events.

Validation of the arrest

Today, before the investigating judge of the Brindisi court, the arrest was confirmed for the 49-year-old BU, the 43-year-old GM and the 30-year-old M.. For the three rossoblù fans the measure of house arrest was replaced with that of the obligation to stay, after the exception presented by the lawyer of two suspects, the lawyer Andrea Maggio. The arrest was not validated for the fourth Ionian supporter, the 43-year-old FM, also defended by the lawyer Andrea Maggio, as he was not subjected to Daspo. However, a complaint against the 43-year-old remains at large, in addition to that of 4 other ultras belonging to the Brindisi fans, including a 16-year-old boy, all reported in a state of freedom for contempt and resistance to a public official for having insulted and outraged the policemen who had found them in possession of objects that could be used as blunt instruments.

What happened

This is what the police ascertained at the end of the match, while the person in charge of the public order service – in line with the instructions of the commissioner Giampietro Lionetti – was busy escorting, together with the patrol personnel, a group of visiting fans who were traveling on board about fifty cars, ensuring the exit of the city. When the line of vehicles reached the intersection between the state road 379 and the state road 7 (the intersection of death which leads from the ring road towards Taranto) the procession (partially) stopped the march, creating problems for road traffic with throwing of paper bombs and smoke bombs. Immediately, it was a deployment of patrols from the Police Headquarters, in synergy with colleagues from the Taranto Mobile Unit, which allowed the troublemakers to be dispersed. Immediately afterwards, the Digos and Upgsp policemen stopped four ultras who had reached a nearby petrol station. On their Lancia Delta, 6 paper bombs, a baseball bat, a PVC pipe, a wrench and an irregularly shaped stone were found. The check revealed that the three Tarantino fans were hit by Daspo and therefore subsequently arrested, while the fourth, the 43-year-old, was reported in a state of freedom. Other police patrols instead noticed the presence of a group of local fans who were ready to clash with the Ionian fans at the beginning of Via Appia, but immediate intervention led to the two factions dispersing. However, the episode saw four people from Brindisi stopped, including the minor, who were reported in a state of freedom for insulting and resisting a public official. All the material found was seized by Digos personnel who will forward to the Anti-Crime Police Division the requests for the worsening of the Daspo for those who were already burdened by it and the initiation of proceedings for the remaining ones reported.
«What happened last Sunday evening – they explained from the Brindisi police station – certainly cannot be traced back to the values of sport represented primarily in respect for the opponent and in the acceptance of defeat.

Furthermore, the same families who frequent the stadium have strongly stigmatized the incident.”
