Florian Wirtz and Patrik Schick saved Bayer Leverkusen from their first defeat in the 35th competitive game of the season. In the 2-2 (2-0) first leg of the round of 16 of the Europa League at Qarabağ Ağdam in Azerbaijan, the Werkself saved the draw after by far the worst half of the season and thus a good starting position for the second leg in Leverkusen.

Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso rested many of his team’s stars after the long journey to the Caucasus in view of the strain in the coming weeks. Granit Xhaka, Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong, among others, sat on the bench at the start. Ağdam took advantage of this in the first half with goals from Yassine Benzia (26th) and Juninho (45th + 2). Substitute Wirtz shortened the gap with Leverkusen’s 100th competitive goal of the season (70th). Patrik Schick (90+2) equalized shortly before the end of the game.
