Two other candidates! Xabi Alonso is apparently not an issue at Liverpool FC

Bayer Leverkusen’s successful coach Xabi Alonso is apparently not a serious candidate to succeed outgoing team manager Jürgen Klopp at Liverpool FC.

As ESPN and Sky Sports UK report, citing sources close to the club, former Liverpool professional Alonso is not on the Reds’ shortlist when looking for a coach.

Accordingly, Roberto De Zerbi from Brighton & Hove Albion and Ruben Amorim from Sporting Lisbon are the top candidates to take over the Klopp legacy.

The German team manager, who has been in office since 2015, announced his departure at the end of the season. Alonso won the Champions League with Liverpool in 2005 and has an excellent reputation at Anfield.

Since Real Madrid, another of the Spaniard’s former clubs, has no need after Carlo Ancelotti’s contract extension, everything boils down to two options for Alonso: Either he stays in Leverkusen, where he is under contract until 2026. Or FC Bayern is successful in its bid for the coveted coach as Thomas Tuchel’s successor.

A scenario that Honorary President Uli Hoeneß currently considers unlikely. Instead, he can imagine Alonso staying.
