Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso is in great demand. FC Bayern is said to have already approached him when looking for a Tuchel successor. But the people of Munich are not alone in this.

According to a report from the TV channel Sky, FC Bayern Munich is said to have held initial discussions with Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso about a possible move in the summer. The German record champions are looking for a successor to Thomas Tuchel, whose departure is certain at the end of the season. Under Alonso’s direction, Bayer leads the table ten game days before the end of the season with a ten point lead over Bayern.

The 42-year-old knows the club from his time as a player, but according to Monday’s report, he has not yet decided whether to leave Leverkusen. In this case, Alonso prefers FC Bayern instead of Liverpool FC, who are also interested. Jürgen Klopp will be leaving the coaching position there at the end of the season.

Alonso’s contract in Leverkusen ends on June 30, 2026. According to information from Sky, FC Bayern would have to pay a transfer fee of 15 to 25 million euros if Alonso were to be signed after the current season. In one year, a written exit clause could come into effect, which should be around 15 million euros.

Successful with “Vizekusen”

Alonso himself was active as a player in Munich between 2014 and 2017. He played 117 competitive games for Bayern (nine goals/twelve assists) and won the championship three times and the cup once with the German industry leader. He also has a close connection to Liverpool FC from his playing days: he was under contract there as a professional from 2004 to 2009 and won the biggest club title of his glorious career with the Champions League triumph in his first season.

After ending his career, Leverkusen is now the first major coaching station where he has had lasting success since joining on October 5, 2022. This season he has yet to experience a defeat in 34 competitive games with Bayer and could bring the club, which once patented the name “Vizekusen”, its first ever championship title. The lead over Bayern as their biggest opponents is ten points after 24 match days.
