Tsunoda wants less swearing via on-board radio: ‘Don’t keep pressing that button’ | formula 1

Yuki Tsunoda sees less swearing over the on-board radio as an important point for improvement. The Japanese from Racing Bulls had an angry outburst during the opening race in Bahrain when he had to leave for teammate Daniel Ricciardo.

“There was real frustration in my brain at that moment,” Tsunoda admitted in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday. “Control over myself is a major area for improvement that I am working hard on.”

Tsunoda is one of the contenders to get a seat at parent team Red Bull next year. He knows that the number of angry outbursts must be reduced if he wants to keep that possibility realistic. “If I do this again, it will cause problems. So I definitely have to work on it and trust that that is possible. Then it is up to Red Bull whether they want me or not.”

In the closing stages of the race in Bahrain, the Japanese was given the team order to let his teammate Ricciardo pass, which he eventually did. “But I was frustrated at the time. It wasn’t an easy race either, that didn’t help. Afterwards we talked about it in the team and I understood.”

Yet the intervention by Racing Bulls team boss Laurent Mekiés seemed unnecessary, because it ultimately concerned a position outside the points. “I was fighting Kevin Magnussen. Daniel was on a different strategy and had the soft tires. They thought he had a better chance.”

‘I don’t shout very often’

After the race, Tsunoda immediately received a visit from Mekiés to discuss the matter. “We are now back on the same page. Laurent already makes me much calmer during the race. That feels good.”

Tsunoda wanted to emphasize that he is not a driver who always swears. “I don’t shout as often as it seems now. I don’t think it helps that the director picks out my on-board radios so often.”

“But the more I say about it, the worse it gets,” Tsunoda wanted to close the topic. “I want to improve and you will see that on the track. I just have to keep reminding myself: don’t keep pressing that radio button.”
