YamashitaWe have really changed as well. Personally, when I was in high school, my father (Tomoshige, the coach from 1967 to 2005) was the coach, and he was very strict and scary. In my father’s day, all you could say was “yes.” Even though I thought it was wrong, I said yes. At that time, I thought that I could not be a director and that it was definitely a job for me. I don’t remember my father taking me anywhere to play, and I was in a bad mood at home if I lost. I really wanted you to give me a break.
――And yet you are now taking command of your alma mater.
YamashitaI wonder what it is. One thing I remember vividly is that I went to Koshien when I was a second year student, but I couldn’t go when I was a third year captain. That was very frustrating. I thought that if there was a way to go again, it would be through an instructor. I remember that a lot. That’s when I decided I needed to get a teaching license.
What has changed since Hideki Matsui’s era?
–I served as acting director since the summer of the year before last, and was officially appointed as director in April of last year. What aspects did you keep in mind when building your team?
YamashitaIn an interview, I was asked, “What kind of color do you want to bring out as a director?” and I answered, “I don’t want my color to come out too much.” Rather, I would like to be in a position that allows each player to bring out their individual colors and supports that. The team changes every year, right? Some teams like to bat, and some teams like to defend. Sometimes it’s cheerful, sometimes it’s serious. I wonder if the way the instructor speaks to them and their demeanor change from time to time. Even though I inherited the baseball style of Mr. Hayashi (former manager Kazunari), I didn’t want to make it seem like Seiryo was a team so it had to be done this way.
–When you become a director, do you find yourself becoming more like your father?
