Tottenham Hotspur Revamps Scouting Department with Departure of Long-Serving Staff

Tottenham Hotspur are letting go five of the club’s longest serving scouts as part of the ongoing restructuring of their football staff.

Ian Broomfield, Augusto Benito and Colin Jackson are all leaving as part of Tottenham’s transformation of their scouting team.

The move is part of a complete review of football operations dating back to the arrival of chief football officer Scott Munn in September 2023. Tottenham then appointed Johan Lange as technical director in October 2023, with Rob Mackenzie following as Tottenham’s new chief scout.

Broomfield was Tottenham chief scout back in the Harry Redknapp era, before leaving in January 2013. Broomfield then returned to the club as a senior scout, a position he has held for years.

Benito was in charge of scouting Spain and Portugal while Jackson scouted first-team and youth players in the north of England.

Tika Musonda, a senior scout who joined from Chelsea in 2022, and Dave Butler are also set to exit.

“The review of our football operations continues and involves the restructuring of a number of departments”, said a Tottenham spokesperson.

Scott Munn: Who is he, what is his role at Spurs, and what will it mean for Paratici?

Substantial changes for Spurs

Analysis by Charlie Eccleshare

It’s almost exactly a year since Spurs announced they would be hiring Scott Munn in a new role of chief football officer.

It was hard to say at that point exactly how much of an overhaul there would be under Munn, but since he officially started his role in September, it’s become clear that he wants to implement substantial changes.

Johan Lange and Rob Mackenzie were significant hires soon after his arrival, and now we are seeing the other side of that: major departures. Ian Broomfield in particular may not be a household name among supporters but among scouts, owners and players he is very well known and respected. His departure was described to The Athletic on Thursday as “hugely significant” by one prominent scout.

All of this, Spurs say, is part of a continuing “review of our football operations,” that “involves the restructuring of a number of departments”. These include the medical department.

As for the recruitment side of things, Lange’s approach is known to be very data-led, and the expectation is that there will be further hires – and departures – this summer that reflect that.

Head coach Ange Postecoglou has made no secret of how underpowered Spurs were in the summer when they were without a director of football, and has since spoken of his good relationship with Lange and Mackenzie and his respect for their work.

He views good recruitment as key to his rebuilding job at Tottenham, and it appears the club are doing all they can to build a structure that supports him.

The wider context to this is that a number of long-serving staff have left Spurs over the last few years in what has been a period of monumental change for the club. The news on Thursday was the latest example of that, and has been badly received by some in and around the club.

Ultimately these decisions will be judged by Tottenham’s performance in the transfer market, which have been much improved in the last few years.
