Toronto Raptors Player Jontay Porter Under NBA Investigation for Betting Irregularities

Toronto Raptors player Jontay Porter is under investigation by the NBA following several instances of betting irregularities in recent months, multiple sources told ESPN on Monday.

During the January 26 game against the Clippers, there was an increase in betting interest in Porter’s underperformance, which was pegged at around 5.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists decisive for the evening.

That night, Porter played only four minutes before leaving the game due to what the Raptors said was a re-aggravation of an eye injury he suffered four days earlier during a game against the Grizzlies. He didn’t score against the Clippers, had three rebounds and an assist, and didn’t attempt a three-pointer, meaning the understatement hit the mark either way.

The next day, as part of a daily report to users on betting results, DraftKings Sportsbook reported that Porter’s underrated 3-point shooting was the biggest winner for bettors.

Two days later, Porter played 19 minutes and scored 12 points with seven rebounds and three assists.

On March 20, in a game against the Phoenix Suns, Porter played only three minutes before leaving the game due to illness, according to the Raptors, and not returning. He didn’t score, attempted and missed a shot, and grabbed two rebounds.

The day after, DraftKings SportsBooks told its users that betting on Porter was the first bet of the night in the NBA.

Porter, the brother of Nuggets star Michael Porter Jr., signed a two-way contract with the Raptors for a salary of $415,000 this season.

He missed the Raptors’ game Saturday against the Washington Wizards for personal reasons, according to the team.

NBA players, as well as all league employees, are prohibited from betting on league events, including pay-per-view betting. Violations of this policy are subject to fines, suspensions, and possible contract termination, among other things.

Sports betting is monitored by specialized staff from each NBA team, and the league has a team of data scientists who focus on sports betting anomalies and possible integrity issues, and also works with independent integrity monitors.
