The son of Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Erik Swanson, hit by a car about ten days ago, is doing better and could leave the hospital at the end of the week.
The 30-year-old gunner’s training camp took an unexpected turn when he learned that 4-year-old Toby had been struck by a sport utility vehicle on Feb. 25 in Clearwater Beach.

After the family announced last week that the little boy had left intensive care, Swanson appeared before reporters for the first time since the incident on Thursday and he had some good news to share.
“I stand here very happy to tell you that in a day or two he will probably be home. Considering the situation, we are very, very lucky in terms of the unfolding of events and the outcome that we now know,” he explained to journalists gathered in Dunedin, according to the Sportsnet network.
Swanson took the opportunity to thank Clearwater first responders and the staff at St. Petersburg Children’s Hospital where Toby was hospitalized. He further praised the courage and mothering qualities of his wife, Madison. These comments also apply to his son.
“He is a very charismatic boy, a very courageous boy, powerful, strong, very extroverted. I believe his personality has allowed him to get through several difficulties over the last 10 days, and through these long days spent in the hospital,” said Swanson.
Lots of support
The father says he was bombarded with get-well messages from everywhere. He hasn’t played a preseason game so far, but we can expect to see him on the mound soon.
“We feel the support,” he said. We felt everyone’s prayers, everyone’s thoughts. It made the process a little easier during this difficult situation. Blue Jays fans, and not just Blue Jays fans, but amazing baseball fans across the league. Other teams wrote. It’s awesome.”
The Blue Jays face the Detroit Tigers on Thursday night at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland.
