Top Senior Basketball Teams to Compete in Buzzer Beater’s National Fair ‘Sweet 16’

Led by Colegio Kingdom de Dorado, for men, and Colegio San Felipe de Arecibo, for women, Buzzer Beater added eight of the 16 senior teams in both branches that will participate in the “Sweet 16” of its national fair, which will be held since March 14 at the Fernando “Rube” Hernández Coliseum, in Gurabo.

After four of the eight regional tournaments have been held, Buzzer Beater has its respective representatives in the senior men’s northwest and southwest sections, and the women’s north and southwest sections. The action will continue on Thursday when the men’s senior east region also sees action in Gurabo.

The president and founder of Buzzer Beater, Bryan Eloy García, classified the event as an extremely competitive one.

“We are halfway through the senior men’s tournament and three teams from the Top 10 are already out. That lets you know how even the tournament is,” García said. The quintets that were among the best 10 and were eliminated are NW Bilingual de Vega Alta, which was discarded by Bayamón Military Academy; Emadrian de Bayamón, who lost to San Rafael de Quebradillas; and Fountain de Guayama that fell against Valvanera de Coamo.

“School basketball has become so widespread that there are already many programs that can compete face to face with each other. “Here we are seeing teams outside the Top 30, giving scares or surprising,” added the president and founder of the platform.

In the men’s northwest section, which was held from March 1 to 2 at the Juan Aubín Cruz Coliseum, in Manatí, Colegio San Rafael de Quebradillas, Colegio San Felipe de Arecibo, Bayamón Military Academy and Kingdom advanced to the “big dance”. Christian Academy of Dorado, who are the defending champions. For Colegio San Rafael de Quebradillas, it will be the first time that they qualify for the best 16 of the tournament, while Bayamón Military Academy and San Felipe de Arecibo return to the national tournament after a year of absence.

On the other hand, in the men’s southwest region, which was held from the 4th to the 5th at the Salvador Dijols Coliseum, in Ponce, the Colegio San Benito de Mayagüez, who are the only institution to qualify in the seven editions of the “Sweet 16”, It joins Academia San Agustín de Sabana Grande, Colegio Valvanera de Coamo and San Conrado de Ponce as the quintets that will represent the region in the tournament.

“It is the first time that Valvanera has classified the sweet sixteen. It was the team that gave the surprise by defeating Fountain de Guayama, which was classified in the best 10 in Puerto Rico, while they were not classified.”

In the female branch, Colegio San Felipe de Arecibo, who are classified number two in the ranking, will represent the northern section along with Colegio San Rafael de Quebradillas, Capitan Correa de Arecibo and NW Bilingual de Vega Alta. The regional tournament was held on March 2 at the Juan Aubín Cruz Coliseum, in Manatí

In the other key already completed, ECEDAO, Academia Inmaculada de Mayagüez, Mayaguez Academy and San Conrado de Ponce are the four teams that advanced to the round in the women’s southwest region. ECEDAO comes to the tournament after losing last year to Colegio Adianez in the final. Meanwhile, Academia Inmaculada de Mayagüez qualified for the first time by winning a “great game” over Family Christian de Ponce. This section was played yesterday, March 5, at the Salvador Dijols Coliseum, in Ponce.

The eastern and metro regions, in both branches, will be defined between Thursday and Sunday.

What can we expect from the remaining regional tournaments?

The regional tournaments will continue on Friday when the senior men’s eastern section sees action at the Fernando “Rube” Hernández Coliseum, in Gurabo, home of the “Sweet Sixteen.” This key features the first classified in Puerto Rico, Academia Cristiana Cohelet, who will debut tomorrow at 9:30 am against Colegio Mi Cuido. According to García, Cohelet looks like the favorite, along with the Angel P. Millán school in Carolina, who have a “high probability” of becoming the second public school to reach the “big dance.”

“Cohelet and Millán are the two favorites to advance to the round in that region. The others are very even,” said the founder of Buzzer Beater.

The region also has La Luz de Juncos and the Kingdom School of Río Grande. If there is no surprise in their respective games, La Luz and Kingdom will compete for a place in the “Sweet 16”. “La Luz is going to have to make the most of Kingdom de Río Grande, if both teams win their respective first round games, that duel is going to be a spectacle,” said García, who pointed out that another interesting dispute of the key will be the match between Colegio De Diego and Santa Gema de Carolina.

Meanwhile, in the men’s metro region, Caguas Private School, which is ranked number two, is the team with the most chances of qualifying. The quintet will face Wesleyan Academy on Saturday, March 9, at 9:30 am. This section will also be played in Gurabo. Apart from Caguas Private School, the Luis Muñoz school in Barranquitas, which is one of two public schools with good options to advance, and the Adianez School in Guaynabo are two teams with great opportunities to reach the “Sweet Sixteen”. A game that we should keep in mind in this section, according to García, is San Mónica against San Pedro Mártir this Saturday at 12:30 pm

On the one hand, in the women’s eastern region, Saint Francis School is the favorite. “An interesting game in this section is between the Ramón Power School of Las Piedras against La Luz de Juncos. If it wins the Power, it becomes the second public school to achieve that classification (ECEDAO has been the other),” said García.

On the other hand, in the women’s metro region, Colegio Adianez de Guaynabo, which is the defending champion, will debut on Sunday, March 10, at 9:30 against María Reina. “In the Metro, Colegio Adianez de Guaynabo, which is the defending champion, the Bayamón Military Academy, Edison de Caguas and the Academia Cristo de los Milagros school in Caguas look like favorites to overtake,” García stated.

The best four teams, by branch, from each regional tournament advance to the “Sweet Sixteen”.
