Top Seed Aryna Sabalenka Upset in Round of 16 at WTA 1000 Indian Wells Tournament

Aryna Sabalenka, seeded number two, failed in the round of 16 at the WTA 1000 tournament in Indian Wells.

The Australian Open winner from Belarus lost to the American Emma Navarro, who was in 23rd position in the ranking, on Wednesday after just under two hours with 3:6.6:3.2:6. For the 25-year-old, it is the second early exit after the one in the second round of Dubai in a row and therefore a setback in the fight for the top of the world rankings.

As last year’s finalist, Sabalenka had a lot of points to defend. For Navarro it is the greatest success of her career; she has never been in the last eight in Indian Wells before. The next opponent is either the Greek Maria Sakkari or the French Diane Parry.

However, the top-seeded Pole Iga Swiatek (6:1,6:2 against Yulia Putintseva) and the American Coco Gauff (6:0,6:2 against Elise Mertens) had no trouble.
