Sandro Tonali’s troubles may not be over. The English FA has officially reported him for breaching the betting rule, accusing him of betting on football 50 times between 12 August and 12 October 2023, in the two months he remained at Newcastle before the investigation began which led to the disqualification, inflicted on him by the FIGC, which he is currently serving. Tonali has until April 5 to respond to the accusations, which could also lead to an extension of the ban for the midfielder who the Magpies signed from Milan last summer.

THE INVESTIGATION

The investigation by the English Football Association began after the closure of the Italian one, which led to the Newcastle midfielder being banned for 10 months starting from Friday 27 October. However, the FIGC’s investigation stopped at the time of Tonali’s transfer to England and the FA, given that the player had admitted to being suffering from gambling addiction, wanted to ascertain whether the former AC Milan player had continued to bet even after his transfer. in Newcastle. The investigation, in which Tonali immediately collaborated, as he had done with the Italian one, went on for several months with the lights off: today the referral arrived for 50 violations in the two months in which Tonali was a Newcastle player. The federation’s press release does not specify whether or not the Italian midfielder has bet on his team’s matches, limiting itself to saying that they are bets on “football matches”.

what is at risk

Precisely because the player is already suspended, the FA could decide, in the event of confirmation of the accusations, to consider his sanctions covered by the ban already inflicted on the midfielder by the Italian federation and to keep the date of his return to the pitch unchanged at the end August. Or the English federation could decide to impose a further disqualification on Tonali, also considering the very high number of violations in such a short time. The longest ban ever imposed on a Premier League player for betting is the 8 months that Ivan Toney, striker for Brentford and the English national team, finished serving on January 16th. Toney had been found guilty of 232 violations over 4 years, with bets including his team’s matches.

THE NEWCASTLE

The Magpies have always been and continue to be on Tonali’s side. “We are aware of the official accusations against Tonali regarding alleged violations of the betting rules – the club said in a statement -. Sandro continues to cooperate with all investigations and maintains the club’s full support. As this is an ongoing investigation, Newcastle do not intend to comment further.” Tonali had resumed training with his teammates almost immediately, working hard on his level of English to better integrate into the team and to ensure he was ready at the end of August. He may have to wait longer.
