Tirinzoni’s super poker fades away

Canada won the 2024 World Women’s Curling Championship. The hosts imposed themselves on the Sydney ice defeating Switzerland in the final with a score of 7-5. Skip Rachel Homan, vice-skip Tracy Fleury, second Emma Miskew and lead Sarah Wilkes took the gold medal interrupting the dominance of the Swiss battleship, which had established itself in the last four world championships.

The Maple Leaf National Team inflicted a great disappointment to Silvana Tirinzoni and teammates, who had gotten the better of Italy in the semifinals (then also beaten by South Korea in the bronze medal match). It’s about the 17th seal in history for Canadawhich hadn’t climbed to the top step since 2018, when it always celebrated in front of its own audience (in that case in North Bay): it is the most victorious national team of all time.

The hosts scored a point in the first end, the Swiss team responded with two points in the second half and Canada equalized the score in the third half (2-2). Back and forth from two points each between the fourth and fifth game, for a 4-4 at halftime. Switzerland returns to the ice with the hammer advantage, signs two null hands and then takes the lead 5-4 after the eighth end. In the ninth set, however, Canada gets excited and even scores three points which effectively closes the contest.
