Tigers fall to Ludwigsburg in intense matchup at sold-out arena

In front of 3,132 people in the sold-out Paul Horn Arena in Tübingen, the Tigers, in which Tigers coach Daniel Jansson did without captain Gianni Otto and shooting guard Zaccheus Darko-Kelly, started off aggressively, especially defensively. But the Tigers also regularly found good offensive solutions in the starting quarter against Ludwigsburg’s intensive press defense. The fans fought a mood contest in the stands – and sometimes insults. Tübingen’s Jimmy Boeheim scored a three-pointer to make it 26:18 as the clock expired.

But Ludwigsburg came back and Jayvon Graves gave the Giants the lead for the first time in the game with a score of 31:30. It remained a fast-paced and intense encounter. At the break, Ludwigsburg led 48:42 – also because the Tigers had only hit two of ten three-pointers (Ludwigsburg 5 of 15).

After the break, the Giants let the threes rain down and scored four times in a row from distance to make it 60:44. Tigers time out just three minutes into the third quarter. With a three-point play, Graves increased the lead to 20 points (77:57) at the end of the third period. At the beginning of the final round, the Tübingen fans demanded of their team: “We want to see you fight!” The game was over for Tübingen’s Georgios Kalaitzakis shortly afterwards: he tripped Graves and received a disqualifying foul for it. “Never German champions, never cup winners, never again second league!” said the Tübingen fans, who continued to sing bravely and loudly. Meanwhile, there wasn’t much going on for the Tigers on the field: Jacob Patrick made Tübingen’s biggest deficit of the game (63:87) with a three-pointer a good six minutes before the end. Occasionally the audience left the hall early. At the end, it was mainly the Ludwigsburg fans who could be heard: “We are number one in the country!”

The Tigers’ best thrower was Jhivvan Jackson with 17 points. Ludwigsburg’s Graves was the game’s top scorer with 20 points.

The Tübingen team continues next Saturday (8 p.m.) with the game at Baskets Würzburg.
