“Three magicians” behind the nine

The German national team will play against France with newcomer Maximilian Mittelstädt (27) from VfB Stuttgart as left-back and Arsenal professional Kai Havertz (24) in attack. This was announced by national coach Julian Nagelsmann before the first international match of the European Championship year this Saturday (9 p.m./ZDF) in Lyon. “I really enjoy playing against top teams. France is one of the top teams when they play with a full band,” said Nagelsmann on Friday before the final training session at the Groupama Stadium.
Mittelstädt convinced the national coach in training and prevailed against the Leipzig duo David Raum (25) and Benjamin Henrichs (27): “He does well defensively and offensively. He will start at left back.” Havertz will act in front of the offensive trio with captain İlkay Gündoğan (33), Florian Wirtz (20) and Jamal Musiala (21), which Nagelsmann called “the three magicians”. Gündoğan reported that the processes worked well in training for the heavily restructured DFB team. Now it’s time to finally prove it in the game again. The Barcelona professional expects “a very physical game” against the French.
After the 2-1 win against France last September, when top star Kylian Mbappé was only on the bench in Dortmund, Gündoğan expects “a tougher test so close to the tournament”. For him, France is, alongside England, the first contender for the European Championship title at the tournament from June 14th to July 14th in Germany.

DFB team: Worker Andrich as a sideman in midfield for Toni Kroos
Almost three years after his DFB resignation, returnee Toni Kroos (34) has a high-hitting six at his side in Robert Andrich (29). Marc-André ter Stegen (31) replaces Manuel Neuer (37) in goal, who was injured again shortly before his comeback, but who remains number one for the European Championships despite his torn muscle fiber, as Nagelsmann assured. “The decision does not change,” said Nagelsmann in Lyon. Defending in front of ter Stegen are Joshua Kimmich (29), Jonathan Tah (28), Antonio Rüdiger (31) and Mittelstädt, who is the only one of the four remaining newcomers who is allowed to play straight away.
