Thomas Meunier Opens Up About His Departure from Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund and Thomas Meunier (32) never really warmed to each other.

In the winter they parted ways after three and a half years and a DFB Cup victory. Meunier didn’t want to leave, but BVB suggested he leave. The Belgian talks about the background to his move.

The right-back at the Belgian national team’s press conference on Thursday: “Dortmund clearly communicated to me that the return of my competitor would banish me back to the bench.”

Background: BVB regular player and Meunier competitor Julian Ryerson (26) was out for two months in the winter due to an inner knee ligament injury. Meunier represented the Norwegian and was in the starting eleven seven times in a row.

However, his solid performances were not rewarded. Instead, BVB’s message was clear. Meunier: “If there was an option in winter, I had to take the chance. Even if I only had a six-month contract left. I think there was a bit of a lack of neutrality and competition.”

Because: The Belgian (63 international matches) really wants to go to the European Championships in Germany (June 14th – July 14th). Because of his bench position in Dortmund, the ex-PSG player was not selected for the “Red Devils” in four international matches in a row.

Meunier: “The national team was my only goal. I had to take a risk to do that.” So the Belgian moved to Trabzonspor in the Turkish Süper Lig. “It’s paying off at the moment,” he says happily. Meunier is based on the Black Sea and is on course for the Europa League with Trabzonspor.

And that is rewarded. National coach Domenico Tedesco (38) nominated the former Dortmund player for the international matches against Ireland (0-0) and England (March 26). In Dublin, Meunier came at half-time and even took over the captain’s armband – that would have been unthinkable given the misunderstanding in Dortmund…
