Thibaut Courtois (31) suffered a tear in the internal meniscus of the right knee during training with Spanish league leader Real Madrid on Tuesday, the club confirmed in a press release.
According to Spanish media, our compatriot left the training center in Valdebebas in tears. He would play a practice match against the promising team on Wednesday and will officially make his comeback at the end of this month, it said.
Due to the new injury, Courtois would be out for another six to seven weeks. Discussions are currently being held about whether or not to operate on the knee. Courtois’ season certainly seems to be over.

Once again a tragedy for Courtois, who had only been training with the Royal Dutch again for a few weeks after being sidelined since August last year with torn cruciate ligaments in his left knee. The expectation was that the goalkeeper could make his return to Real after the international break, just in time for the important competition final, including a clash against Manchester City in the quarter-finals of the Champions League and the title battle in Spain.
That planned return came sooner than expected. In December last year, Courtois admitted in an interview with Belgian media that he was aiming for a return in May, which would mean that the European Championships in Germany would be just too early to go all out for weeks. The Limburger then announced that he would certainly not participate in the European Championship with the Devils. In the meantime, the bridges between national coach Domenico Tedesco and Courtois seem to have been definitively blown. Tedesco stated during a press conference last week that he had “tried everything, absolutely everything” regarding the goalkeeper. Courtois then responded online with three long nose emojis. The goalkeeper seemed to insinuate that the national coach is lying.
