The Road to the Olympics: A Look at Italy’s Golfers and Their Quest for Qualification

The time for decisions regarding golf at the Olympics is getting closer and closer. What will be seen at Le Golf National in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, not far from Paris, will be the third Olympic tournament since the discipline’s return to the five-ring ranks. We are going to underline in particular the situation in Italy as things currently stand.

A premise must be made: in golf 4 places are available per country if the golfers are in the first 15 places, otherwise the number drops to 2. In essence, the very limited range applies almost entirely to the United States, which can boast four elements in the 15 among both men and women. There are three current participants for South Korea among women. It should be noted that, since the States generally have several dozen players within the top 300 of the men’s and women’s rankings, this significantly increases the entry criteria for the Olympics. And here Italy also comes into play.

Our country, in fact, currently has four passes available, equally divided and all obviously still to be confirmed through the latest rankings available before the Olympic event. In particular, for men the ranking will continue until Monday 17 June (i.e. after the US Open), while for women the deadline will be 24 June (i.e. after the Women’s PGA Championship, also the third Major of the ‘year). The reason for the delay is linked to the different weeks taken by the two tournaments: 1-4 August for men, 7-10 for women, with the now traditional formula of the field at 60 without any cut after the second round.

Golf, the DP World Tour lands in India in Easter week. Seven blues are looking for a new high pitch

Starting from the men’s side, in Italy the victory at the Jonsson Workwear Open made things worthwhile Matteo Manassero on the Olympic track, the same one that saw him make his debut in 2016 in Rio (he finished 27th in the edition won by Justin Rose). In addition to the Venetian, who is deserving every certificate of esteem in his favor by virtue of the great effort made in returning to high levels, at the moment there is a very close fight between Francesco Molinari and Guido Migliozzi. Currently, the latter would be qualified, 240th in the world ranking against the 250th place of the winner of the 2018 Open Championship. In any case, it is a very open fight that could ignite in the coming weeks, especially when the DP World Tour will return to Europe, and involve several of our other standard bearers.

In the women’s field, however, it is worth highlighting the excellent start to 2024 Alessandra Fanali. The twenty-four year old from Fiuggi particularly stood out on the Ladies European Tour: second place at the Kenya Open which made her jump from 304th to 218th place in the world, then 14th in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, 24th in Rabat, in Morocco, and 33rd in Clearwater, Tampa (USA) allowed it to rise to 187th place (it is now 189th). Instead, she occupies exactly the 300th Virginia Elena Letter, which in the Riyadh-Rabat-Clearwater sequence collected a missed cut, a 30th and a 50th place. At the end of 2023 the Milanese achieved a double 11th place in Hong Kong and again in Riyadh, useful for emerging from a particularly negative period. The two will now be busy in Australia, first in New South Wales and then in Bonville.
