The Rise of High School Baseball Research at the Japan Baseball Society Conference in 2024

Spring season has finally begun. While Koshien is filled with high school baseball players playing, in 2024 there are many high school students who are interested in “researching baseball.” We covered the efforts of high school students at the “Japan Baseball Society” research tournament, which can be called the “Koshien of knowledge”.

The Japanese Baseball Science Research Group changed its name to the Japan Baseball Society last year. Researchers from universities and private research institutes who conduct various research on baseball, people involved in professional baseball, coaches from universities, high schools, junior high schools, and development staff from sports manufacturers gather to discuss various issues and conduct research. Make an announcement.

At the “research conference” that Kuwata, Yoshii, and Hitoshi also visited.

The research conference held at Biwako Seikei Sports University on December 2nd and 3rd of last year included Giants second team manager Masumi Kuwata, former DeNA second team manager Toshihisa Hitoshi, and Chiba Lotte Marines manager Rito Yoshii. Other famous baseball figures also showed up.

Along with symposiums and lectures, poster presentations are a specialty of this conference. Researchers and research institutes compile their research presentations on a single theme into the size of a single sheet of paper, display them at the venue, and present them to visitors. This time, a total of 88 presentations were made.

Initially, there were many presentations from universities, research institutes, sports manufacturers, etc., but in recent years high school students have been the most prominent. Players and managers of high school baseball teams research and present on tactical and strategic themes of baseball, as well as familiar issues.

Starting with Tottori Prefectural Yonago Higashi High School exhibiting at the poster exhibition in 2018, the number of participating schools has increased year by year. This year, there were 18 presentations from nine schools. Let’s give an overview below.

・“Reconstructing Nomura-style ID baseball using modern MLB data analysis”

The terms “low outside angle in times of trouble,” “connecting baseball,” and “platoon system” were redefined by analyzing 15 years of data from MLB’s data site “STATCAST.”

・”Science of mental health: Real preparation for the match”

Under the guidance of Kajisahei, a former member of the University of Tokyo baseball team and an associate professor at Toyo University, researchers at Gion Kita High School and Takeda High School conducted monitoring of adrenaline, an indicator of “tension and excitement,” based on blood sugar levels.
