The Rise of Archery in Montgiscard: A Local Club’s Legacy of Success

The local archery club, established in Montgiscard since 2003, is distinguished by its history rich in national success. With around a hundred licensees, it has become a major player in archery in France.

Since its inception, the club has accumulated an impressive record of domestic results. From bronze medals to gold titles, the Montgiscard team has stood out in different categories over the years. The club can boast of having the greatest number of qualifiers for the French championships over the last two years.

At the head of the club, a management team which chooses to make important decisions in consultation. Michel Pascal has been president of the club for 23 years. Equipped with four federal coaches, trained by the French Archery Federation, with several years of experience, they initiate and improve the members of the club, in order to develop the skills of archers.

Open to beginners from the age of 10, the club welcomes a diversity of members with no upper age limit. Beginners follow a progression program, supervised and corrected over the years by coaches. Some even qualify for the French championships.

A local club focused on nature shooting

The discipline practiced by the club, Nature archery, takes place outdoors on wooded courses.

With targets representing animals of varying sizes, archers must shoot from two different shooting ranges. Competitions are often tricky, adding a strategic and technical dimension to shooting.

The club is actively preparing for the 2024 French Nature Archery Championship, which it will host from May 17 to 19. More than 650 archers are expected, ready to take on the challenge on four courses set out in the woods of Montgiscard and Deyme.

Archers are rated on their accuracy on 21 different targets. Complex scoring awards points based on affected areas on animals.

As the president points out, “Without revealing the different situations that the competitors will encounter, we can say that targets will be fired in upward, downward, flat positions, etc. The goal is to have shooting situations technical and tricky.”

On the sidelines of these two days, participants will have the opportunity to eat and discuss their performances. Introductory archery sessions will be offered for companions and visitors. A raffle and regional exhibitor stands will be organized on the site.

The Championship benefits from the support of private partners, regional and departmental authorities, as well as regional and departmental archery committees.

Sicoval also contributes logistically, emphasizing the importance of partnerships for the success of such an event.
