The end came very abruptly last August in a game against the Cincinnati Reds – and according to the first bulletin, the head coach of the Los Angeles Angels probably wanted one thing above all else: to appease millions of unsettled fans. The arm just didn’t feel the same, the player assured him after he gave up and left the court. Not more.

A day later, a precise medical report revealed something much more serious. Shohei Ohtani, probably the best professional baseball player in the world, tore a ligament in his right elbow. In the arm with which he uses the accumulated centrifugal force of an explosive backswing hundreds of times per game and even more often in training to throw the small, hard ball at his opponents at speeds of up to 170 kilometers per hour.
