The Rise and Fall of Omar Megeed: A Promising Talent’s Struggle at Hamburger SV

There was a lot of excitement surrounding Omar Megeed (18), and there was huge hope for a bright future!

But things have become very quiet around Hamburger SV’s top talent. The hoped-for professional career is currently a long way off. But first things first.

On August 13, 2022, there was a historic event with HSV’s 2-0 win at the Bielefelder Alm. The then 16-year-old offensive talent was substituted on for Robert Glatzel (30) by coach Tim Walter (48) in the 89th minute, just five days before his 17th birthday.

With this campaign, the Egyptian became the youngest player to play for HSV since the Bundesliga was founded in 1963 – at 16 years and 359 days.

The path for a professional career (2 second division appearances) seemed paved. Especially because he had one of his biggest supporters in the club, Walter. The U20 national player can train with the professionals at Volkspark until November 2023.

But Megeed was no longer able to convince in the units. Walter liked Omar’s training achievements less and less. He sent him to the U21. Omar wasn’t able to shine sustainably there either. Now he practices with the regional league team, but only plays in the U19 team.

His facilities are neat. Omar is credited with good finishing and decent dribbling. When it comes to understanding the game, there is still room for improvement.

NO ONE expects that! Brilliant HSV free kick

The HSV career of the top talent (contract until 2025) is at a crossroads. It should be agreed that Megeed will train and play for the club’s U21 team in the coming season. If he doesn’t perform in the regional league (4th league), he will probably have to set other sporting goals. It will be a fateful season for him.

Megeed also hopes to gain new impetus through a change in management, which is why he has hired a new consultant to advocate for his interests.
