The Rise and Fall of Clément Grenier: A Forgotten Talent in French Football

Among the fallen great hopes of French football, Clément Grenier is too often forgotten. However, when he started at OL, the native of Annonay had everything to become a member of the French team in the years that were to follow. Unfortunately for him and the Gones, nothing went as planned. After several seasons at the high level in Ligue 1, OL’s number 7 at that time suffered pubalgia which caused him to miss the 2014 World Cup. Then affected by staphylococcus aureus during his operation, Grenier missed a much of the 2014-2015 season and his return is not attractive with Les Gones.

The following year, Clément Grenier officially said goodbye to his favorite club and joined En Avant Guingamp in the winter of 2018 after spending six months with the OL reserves. And after six less interesting ones in Brittany, the right-hander stayed there and joined Rennes the following summer. From his 93 matches in three seasons with SRFC, Grenier made a lasting place for himself in the Breton squad despite several physical problems which continued to torment him.

Interesting from his first months with the training of the Balearic Islands, the Ardéchois performed well during the 2022 vintage- 2023 but is not preserved. This is how we get to his signing for Racing Santander at the start of the season. Very quickly established, the French international (5 caps) played a series of matches. And like his tumultuous career, it was ultimately his body that betrayed him again. Affected in the thigh at the end of last year, Clément Grenier resumed in January but relapsed due to the same muscular problems. In total, the midfielder has only played 14 minutes this year after three months of competition. On the way back, he was on the bench during the draw against Oviedo last week (1-1). From now on, his future in Spain and in football is questionable. Unable to have a full season for too many years, Clément Grenier has never been able to capitalize on his incredible talent to reach the summits. Even if he must have happy days living in Spain, it now seems utopian to see him return to the top in the coming months.
