The paradox of the new Champions League. And those who go out are in trouble…

The study on the new Champions

But be careful: the value of each single match drops from 8 to 6 million with the risk that if you don’t qualify for the top eight, which will automatically go to the round of 16, or at least for the play-offs – which guarantee at least two more matches – you risk earning less than playing the “old” Group. In the Champions League the increase in the number of matches is greater than the overall increase in revenues – 51.2 percent more matches against the 21.4 percent increase in revenues – and therefore on average the profit will be lower on a single match by 19.7 percent. Drop that stops at 9.4 for the Europa League.

The analysis, developed by the Catholic University of Milan, highlights how “During the group matches, UEFA guaranteed the clubs 2.8 million for each victory while now the figure drops to 2.1. The same for draws, which went from 0.9 million to 0.7″. And therefore a hypothetical victory in the group (which involves 8 matches for each team with draws divided into groups) of a small team against a big team will be worth less than that in the groups of the last Champions League.
