The Most Dominant NBA Regular Season Teams Since 1984: A Look at Playoff Exclusions

Attention: We are limiting this list to the last 40 years, i.e. since 1984. At this point in time, the NBA playoffs were expanded to today’s format with 16 teams. Previously there were significantly fewer playoff teams, so even better records were not enough for the postseason. In addition, the playoff places were awarded exclusively based on placement in their own division.

(An example: The Phoenix Suns achieved an excellent record of 49-33 in the 71/72 season. But that was only third place in the Midwest Division, which is why the Suns were in trouble. Three of a total of eight playoff teams had a worse balance.)

The play-in tournament introduced in 2020 also means that teams with the seventh or eighth best record in their respective conference can end up empty-handed.
