The Many Uses of ‘Round Robin’ in Baseball Tournaments

Almost all Baseball tournaments are of the “Round Robin” type, but this term is used for the playoffs when it is decided that one or more rounds are played “all against all.”

Searching the dictionary, we discovered that the term is used in operations research (branch of computing) for resource management and it is said that a “Round Robin” is used when all those involved receive the same amount of resources each.

Why does it take time to load the page on the internet? Well, each user receives the same number of packets that the download time allows. If there are many users connected, an algorithm decides when and how much each one receives. It usually takes very small fractions of seconds.

So what is a Round Robin? Whenever the teams are grouped together and each one must play the same number of games against rival teams, it is called Round Robin. The Major Leagues are not a Round Robin (teams play more games against the teams in their division than against the teams in the other two divisions, much less against the teams in the other league), Playoffs in the Caribbean professional leagues if they are a Round Robin.

Example of when it is not a Round Robin: Tennis is generally played by sudden death, the loser does not play anymore, the champion and the runner-up play all the rounds.

Typical example of a World Baseball and Softball Confederation tournament schedule. The Opening Round consists of a Round Robin for group A and another for group B. The Super Round (Play off) is three games for each team against teams they have not faced: it is not a Round Robin , exactly. The final between first and second is sudden death.
