The Madrid prosecutor’s office has asked for almost 5 years in prison for Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti for tax fraud

The Madrid prosecutor’s office has asked that Carlo Ancelotti, coach of the Real Madrid football team, be sentenced to 4 years and 9 months in prison for defrauding the Spanish tax authorities of over one million euros. According to the prosecutor’s office, during his first role as coach of Real Madrid between 2014 and 2016, Ancelotti declared to the Spanish state only the revenues obtained as coach of the team, and instead omitted the income corresponding to the exploitation of his image rights by the Real Madrid club and other contracts.

Despite being Italian, Ancelotti had at the time moved his tax residence to Spain and resided permanently in an apartment in Madrid. According to the prosecutor’s office, he transferred the management of his image rights to a “complex and confusing” network of companies attributable to him but whose tax residence was registered outside Spain. The prosecution claims that in this way Ancelotti did not pay the Spanish state 386,361 euros in 2014 and 675,718 euros in 2015, for a total of 1,062,079 euros.

In 2021 Ancelotti had admitted to having evaded taxes in 2014, saying he had been “ill advised” by his financial advisors, but denied having done so in 2015.
