The History of the Serbia-Montenegrin Under-20 National Basketball Team

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

The Serbia-Montenegrin Under-20 National Basketball Team, former Federal Republic of Yugoslavia Under-20 Basketball National Team, former Serbia-Montenegrin Junior National Basketball Team and former Federal Republic of Yugoslavia Under-22 Basketball National Team, was a youth selection of Yugoslavia and Serbia and Montenegro, and was represented by the best players of Serbian-Montenegrin nationality aged no more than 20 years.

He participated in all the international youth basketball events for nations managed by FIBA.

Over the years this selection has undergone some changes in its name, due to adjustments in FIBA regulations regarding the classification of youth categories. At the beginning the original name was Nazionale Juniores, as FIBA classified the age groups under 22 with the name “juniores”. Subsequently, the name and age groups were equated, becoming the National Under 22 team. Since 2000, FIBA has changed everything again, equating both name and age groups under the term “under 20”. Since then the selection has taken its current name.

In the period from 1992 to 2006, he participated in international competitions as the Under-20 national team of the Confederation of Serbia and Montenegro, with different names:

  • period 1992-2000, under the name “National Under-22 team of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia”
  • period 2000-2003, under the name “National Under-20 team of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia”
  • period 2003-2006, under the name “Serbia and Montenegro Under-20 National Team”

In the summer of 2006, with the independence obtained from Montenegro, Serbia became a separate state, the Confederation was dissolved, and consequently its national sports team, from which the two new national teams originated:
