Roland-Garros, a look back at the history of the emblematic tournament

The history of Roland-Garros begins in 1891 with the French Clay Court Championships, initially reserved for members of French clubs. Max Decugis dominated his era with 8 victories between 1903 and 1914.

In 1925, the tournament became international, becoming the French Open. He enters his golden age with Suzanne Lenglen and the Musketeers. The Davis Cup victory in 1927 led to the construction of the Roland Garros stadium. His name was not chosen at random: Roland Garros was a fellow student at the HEC school of Emile Lesieur, the president of Stade français. When the president of the French stadium won the tender to own the land, he built the entire enclosure that we know today. To pay tribute to his friend, Emile Lesieur decided to name the stadium Roland-Garros.

After the Second World War, the tournament was dominated by Anglo-Saxon players, such as Rod Laver, Ken Rosewall and Margaret Court.

The era of professionalism, from 1968, increased the stature of Roland-Garros, with great tennis legends. Björn Borg, Chris Evert, Ivan Lendl and Steffi Graf in particular leave their mark in the history of professional tennis.

In recent years, Roland-Garros has been marked by Spanish domination. Impossible to miss Rafael Nadal’s ten titles! The tournament was also the scene of moving victories as evidenced by those of Andre Agassi, Roger Federer, Wawrinka and Novak Djokovic.

Roland-Garros saw iconic tennis figures parade, each proudly displaying quality equipment leading to victory. A few months before the 133rd edition of Roland-Garros, equip yourself like a professional.

Reach your full potential with the NikeCourt Advantage T-shirt, designed to assert your game without getting in the way. With Dri-FIT technology, you stay dry by effectively eliminating perspiration. The fabric, stretchy and breathable, gives you perfect freedom of movement. The fitted shoulder seams are designed to reduce pressure or increase comfort with every serve, smash and volley.

This technical t-shirt is accompanied by the NikeCourt Advantage tennis shorts, designed for performance. Its breathable fabric keeps you perfectly cool during your matches. Like the t-shirt, the shorts feature Dri-FIT technology to wick away sweat. It is equipped with pockets specially designed to carry balls without hindering your mobility. The small slits at the bottom of the shorts allow you to be more free in lateral movements (even more so when you play on clay). This is a real asset when matches get longer. With this technology, perspiration does not stick the shorts to the skin.

The NikeCourt Air Zoom Vapor 11 model, popular with professionals, provides its technicality for a game that is as fast as it is sustained. The low-top design of this sporty sneaker brings you closer to the ground, promoting quick movements and instant reactions. Optimal stability, easy entry and a Zoom Air unit in the forefoot make it the perfect shoe for any tennis player.

Good wristbands are essential when playing high-level tennis. The Nike Premier models, as absorbent as they are stretchy, are perfect allies on the courts. They prevent arm sweat from running onto the hand.
