Calling it a tour de force wouldn’t even convey the idea. Inter and Juventus, with a similar fate for all the European teams that will participate in the next Club World Cup, could play between 50 and 69 matches next season. In reality, formally, this new competition actually prevents us from thinking with the concept of “season” to which we are accustomed. In fact, being played in the United States from 15 June to 13 July 2025, it straddles two different sporting years, with all the contractual and financial repercussions that may derive from it. In the meantime, for now, it is good to focus on a calendar that is becoming increasingly overloaded in a way similar to the NBA.

Take the 2024-25 season for example, assuming that the current one ends with the current ranking. It can reasonably be assumed that Serie A could start on the weekend of 17-18 August. The championship, as we know, consists of 38 races and will presumably end in May, without interruptions during the Christmas holidays. The Champions League, however, will no longer be what we know and will change format. The matches in the group stage, which will become unique, increase to 8 guaranteed for each team, which will play four matches at home and the same number away. While the top eight in the standings will directly advance to the round of 16, the clubs in positions from ninth to twenty-four will face each other in a home and away play-off. Therefore, reaching the final via this additional round means playing a maximum of 17 matches.

The format of the Italian Cup remains unchanged for now, so Inter and Juventus take to the field directly in the round of 16 in a single match, as well as the quarter-finals and a possible final, while the semi-finals are divided into two matches. You can play between 1 and 5 races. Finally, there is the Italian Super Cup and both teams are fully in the running to enter it: Inter is aiming for the Scudetto, Juventus can either finish second or reach the final of the Italian Cup. In that case, one or two matches would be added, probably to be played abroad for commercial reasons. And here is the total anticipated at the beginning, between 50 and 69, from August to July of the following year. Once upon a time there was the canonical end of a season set for June 30th. This too is now destined to disappear.
