The Evolution of Shuttlecock: From Child’s Game to Contemporary Badminton

A boy with a palette on an antique tile from the 2nd half of the 17th century.

As a child’s game, this was once known as shuttlecock.

In the late Middle Ages, shuttlecock was practiced by the elite.
From the 17th century it was also played by “ordinary” children.
In 1873, Duke De Beaufort in Gloucester England took the game seriously and elevated it to a sport; contemporary badminton.

The shuttlecock was hit with a wooden pallet, or a racket, strung with yarn.
Shuttlecock is the predecessor of both badminton and tennis.

The opponent is not painted on this tile. Children’s play tiles often consist of a series with a few children or a series with 2 to 3 children. I suspect the single child tiles were cheaper because less paint and less labor intensive.

The tile is in beautiful condition, no breakage or restoration. Beautiful clear and shiny glaze.

NO MINIMUM PRICE

Will be sent by registered mail. Combined shipping is possible. Netherlands 0-10 kilos 11 euros. Europe 0-2 kilos 16 euros, 2-10 kilos 27.50 euros. Worldwide 0-2 kilos 26 euros.
