The Evolution of Badminton in the Olympic Games: A Dominance by Asian Nations

Badminton originally appeared at the Olympic Games as a demonstration sport at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. In 1988, it reappeared as a demonstration sport in Seoul, then it finally made its official entry into the Olympic program in 1992, at the Barcelona Games. Men’s and women’s singles and doubles events are organized, and a mixed doubles event is added to the program at the Atlanta Olympic Games in 1996. Asian nations dominate the list of medalists, with athletes from this continent sharing 106 of the 121 possible medals in the Olympic history of badminton.

For Paris 2024, 172 athletes will participate in five badminton events, which will award five gold, silver and bronze medals over the ten days of competition.
