The Football Association (FA, the official federation of English football) has accused the Italian Newcastle player Sandro Tonali of illicit conduct, due to over 50 bets he allegedly made between August and October 2023 in violation of the federation’s rules (the footballers professionally they cannot bet on football). Newcastle wrote on X (Twitter) that they were aware of the charges brought against Tonali, but did not wish to make further comments.
Newcastle United acknowledges a misconduct charge received by Sandro Tonali in respect of alleged breaches of FA Betting Rules.
Sandro continues to fully comply with relevant investigations and he retains the club’s full support.

Last October Tonali, who previously played for Milan, had already received a ten-month ban from the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) again for having illegally bet on some football matches. Following a plea agreement, the FIGC also imposed eight months of alternative prescriptions, which include therapeutic activities against gambling addiction. In July Tonali left Milan to join Newcastle, but the suspension also applies in England.
