The Controversial Critique of Jorge Sampaoli by Claudio “Bichi” Borghi

The strong statements of Claudio “Bichi” Borghi against Jorge Sampaoli

Claudio Borghi was once again very critical of Jorge Sampaoli and this time he went beyond the sporting aspect. The former Argentinos Juniors footballer took aim at Casilda’s coach, who replaced him in the Chile team in the middle of the qualifiers for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

The world champion in Mexico 1986 was consulted by former goalkeeper Sergio Goycochea about why he believed that the coach failed when he led the Argentine team in Russia 2018. “I have two opinions about Sampaoli. The human one is disastrous. For me, he is a person with very few values. He believes that everything can be done to achieve what he wants and that doesn’t seem like it to me, even risking the physical health of a player for a match,” said Bichi in a talk on the DSelección program on DSports Radio.

Although he acknowledged that his successor in La Roja did a job. “On the professional side he did very well in Chile. He did very well at the University of Chile and later became champion of America, another great merit. I value people more than championships. I have the championships I won saved in a drawer and some remember them. What I always preach is that people are important so that others love us. Sampaoli will never have that,” he stated.

However, he once again insisted on the human aspect of his colleague from Santa Fe. “He may have all the merits in the world and the medals, but I don’t think the Argentine people will pass by him and respect him in a good way,” he concluded.

Borghi led the Chilean team between February 2011 and November 2012. In the Copa América held in Argentina they were eliminated in the quarterfinals against Venezuela. In qualifying for the World Cup in Brazil he won four games, but lost five. After a friendly defeat against Serbia (3-1), he was kicked out by the National Professional Football Association (ANFP).

Sampaoli took his place due to the successes he achieved at the University of Chile (three First Division titles, a Chile Cup and a South American Cup). He managed to get Chile directly into the ecumenical tournament, where they lost on penalties against the local team after playing a great game in the 1-1 draw against Verdeamarela. The following year he won the Copa América held in Chile after beating Argentina on penalties.

On another occasion Borghi had already been harsh with Sampaoli. “I admire Sampaoli very much, in my neighborhood we would call him a pig up the tree because no one knows how he got so high. I admire him because from where he came from to where he arrived, to do what he did, you have to be a very intelligent guy,” he said in an interview with TyC Sports. And he added that he “doesn’t necessarily have to know about football, but he is very intelligent. Not only did he make it to the Argentine team, but he excited an entire town about being world champion without any kind of project. To do that you have to be a very lively guy.”

On the other hand, Borghi also referred to the Argentine team’s 3-0 victory against El Salvador this Friday: “When Messi is in the team you have more confidence, but Scaloni showed that he has the ability and players to make changes to the scheme. when Messi is not a starter.”

Borghi (59 years old), left technical direction in 2016 after working in the Quito League and then dedicated himself to being a commentator. While Sampaoli (64), after being fired from Flamengo last September after being eliminated in the Copa Libertadores (he was the current champion), has not yet returned to direct.
