Gareth Southgate has a wealth of riches at his disposal when it comes to players for his England squad but unfortunately he can only take 23 on the plane to Germany for the Euros this summer.

Whittling down his squad is going to be difficult, especially when some players, Harry Kane in particular, are guaranteed a starting role if fit.

Southgate will need an ace up his sleeve to lead the line, though.

What if Kane picks up an injury? What if England are chasing a game and need an extra striker on the pitch?

There are many scenarios that could fall in Southgate’s lap and he needs a trusted striker to step up to the plate.

Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins and Brentford’s Ivan Toney are the two leading candidates.

Watkins struggled to have much of an impact when starting against Brazil on Saturday, but he has been delivering for Villa this term, scoring 16 goals in the Premier League with only Manchester City’s Erling Haaland (18) boasting a better record.

Toney, who is set to win his second cap for the Three Lions tonight, has impressed since returning from his eight-month suspension for breaching FA betting rules.

He has scored four goals in 10 appearances for the Bees in 2023-24.
