After Dominic Thiem simply no longer wanted to get back into the swing of success and wanted to end his career at the end of the year while the team continued to be in a downward spiral, the public call for Günter Bresnik to make a comeback as a supervisor became louder and louder. The successful duo ended their collaboration in April 2019. Thiem explained at the time that it was a step of emancipation. Although the Lichtenwörther native was able to celebrate his greatest career success the following year with the US Open title, things went steadily downhill from then on.
After the separation, there was a public mudslinging between Bresnik and Thiem’s father Wolfgang, which ultimately ended in court. For this reason, it was considered impossible that there would ever be a collaboration between the successful Viennese coach and the 17-time tournament winner again.

In the Bresnik column “Trainer Box” that appeared in the “Salzburger Nachrichten”, the 62-year-old now took a stand on the topic: “One thing is certain for me: If Dominic says yes to a serious attempt, then he will be the right coach for him – and no coach who practices his job with heart and soul can say no.” Since Bresnik corresponds exactly to this coach profile, this statement can definitely be seen as an offer to Thiem.
Bresnik worked with Thiem for 14 years. As an observer of his past matches, including against his own protégé Lukas Neumayer, Bresnik said in the comment: “Dominic has lost the joy in his job.” He doesn’t know whether he can find it again. “The basic impetus has to come from him, but he will not be able to make the comeback alone, but only with competent help.”
