The Addiction of Tennis: Former Player Andrea Petkovic Opens Up About Post-Retirement Struggles in New Book

After retiring from her career in 2022, tennis player Andrea Petkovic fell into a real hole. The sport was like an addiction before. The Darmstadt resident has now written a book about this experience.

Andrea Petkovic was surprised by the impact of her career end. “It’s like your family. Being a competitive athlete is an identity. I think you have the feeling that you’re taking a whole part of yourself and throwing it away,” said the 36-year-old former tennis player to the dpa news agency. “I underestimated the whole experience of ending my career a bit because I always had the feeling that I had built up so many other things for myself, for me it won’t be that bad to let go of tennis. And then boom, surprise: it was very bad. “

The former world-class tennis player wrote the book “Time to Get Out of the Dust,” which will be published this Thursday, about the end of her career and the step into her new life. The woman from Darmstadt, who quit professional sports at the US Open in 2022, perceives tennis as an addiction.

“Normal life is much, much more complex”

“This constant knockout system is totally addictive because it has such a clear structure. You are either rewarded with a win or you are punished with a defeat, and there is nothing in between,” said Petkovic: “The normal one Life is much, much more complex. When you grow up as a tennis player, you get used to black and white thinking.”

The new release is her second book after her debut “Between Fame and Honor Lies the Night,” which she published during her career. The former world number nine explained that she couldn’t imagine ever not writing: “When I see myself sitting somewhere at the age of 80, I still see myself writing. I’ll probably dictate texts into my cell phone, depending on what what you’ll do in 50 years.”
