Although their performances in the league and internationally have been poor recently, Eintracht Frankfurt still has a chance of reaching the Champions League. There is additional reason for optimism.

It’s already a crazy season. According to the headlines of the past few weeks, Frankfurt Eintracht should be in danger of relegation, and the team’s performance actually didn’t stand out much from the level of the Kellerkinder, if you ignore the Darmstadt slapstick drama in their 6-0 defeat against FC Augsburg . But the truth is: If coach Dino Toppmöller’s team defeats TSG Hoffenheim in the Stadion am Stadtwald this Sunday (5.30 p.m. in the FAZ live ticker for the Bundesliga and on DAZN), then they will be seven points ahead of the seventh-placed team with nine match days to go and will therefore be in a fairly promising situation to play internationally again next season.

It doesn’t necessarily have to be the Conference League into which the sixth-place team in the Bundesliga is sent. If Borussia Dortmund were to lose at Werder Bremen on Saturday evening, then even fifth place would be possible again. Next week the Frankfurters will meet BVB and in a direct duel they could reduce the gap to Borussia to one point. Admittedly, there are a lot of ifs, but after all the negativity in the last few weeks, the opportunities can be highlighted.
