Terrell Owens: From Football Hall of Famer to Entrepreneurial Success Story

Terrell Owens

One common argument among sports fans is the GOAT (greatest of all time) conversation. When it comes to the NFL, one of the consistent names that comes to mind is former New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady. However, top-performing players do not start and stop with the leading position. They need wide receivers to throw to, and you can’t ignore Terrell Owens when looking down the history of top-performing athletes at that position.

The NFL lists Owens as the No. 6 greatest wide receiver of all time. He had 1,078 receptions, 15,934 yards, and 153 touchdowns during his professional football career. While his high-performing career did not yield him a Super Bowl championship, he was inducted as a 2018 Football Hall of Fame class member.

While his on and off-field accomplishments were impressive, a previous report from AFROTECH™ noted that Owens lost a majority of his fortune after an unfortunate suicide attempt and a string of bad financial decisions.

According to Celebrity Net Worth, Terrell Owens’ current net worth is an estimated $500,000.

In a conversation with GQ, the 50-year-old detailed that some of his poor financial decisions were mainly due to his trust in others to invest and manage his money.

“I hate myself for letting this happen,” he told the fashion publication. “I believed they had my back when they said, ‘You take care of the football, and we’ll do the rest.’ And in the end, they just basically stole from me.”

Owens has made his financial woes a thing of the past. As reported by CNBC, during the 2017 Collision Conference in New Orleans, LA, Owens noted seven things that the NFL taught him about business as he now takes ownership of his finances.

“I have to go do my due diligence. When I wasn’t as knowledgeable, when I put a lot of trust in the people that I hired, those are the ones that burned me when I wasn’t really 100 percent in.”

This “all in” mindset is Owens’ perspective as an entrepreneur. The former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver founded Prototype 81, an active lifestyle brand. Based on the company’s website, it was inspired by his mother’s work as a seamstress, understanding the power clothing has on a person’s confidence.
