Tatami: The Powerful Collaboration of Iranian and Israeli Directors in a Film About Sports and Politics

Rome, 25 March. (askanews) – An Iranian director, Zar Amir, and an Israeli director, Guy Nattiv, together sign “Tatami”, a dry, powerful, current film, set in the world of sport, in cinemas from April 4th. The protagonist is an Iranian judoka who during the world championships, together with her coach played by Zar Amir herself, receives orders from the Islamic Republic to abandon the competitions, because there is the risk that she will meet the Israeli athlete on the tatami .

Zar Amir, already Palme d’Or winner in Cannes as best actress for the splendid “Holy Spider”, says: “I grew up during the war between Iran and Iraq and at school they lined us all up to shout slogans against the United States and Israel , which for the system was our main enemy. Then as I grew up I met many Israelis but I had never worked so closely with one of them and at the beginning, I must say, I was a little hesitant. Then I said to myself: but this is exactly what we tell in the film!”.

Zar Amir was forced to flee to France and is always at the forefront of supporting Iranian women who claim their freedom. Guy Nattiv, very critical of the Netanyahu government, won the Oscar in 2019 for the short film “Skin”, about racism in the United States. When they began this project together, the revolution of Iranian women had not yet begun, and today the film has an even greater value.

“Of course the world seems to be getting worse today: there are many far-right governments, from Israel to Argentina, but there are also many protests, the women’s revolution in Iran is perhaps quieter but it is increasingly rooted. The film touches a raw nerve. We were on set when the women’s demonstrations began in Iran and we had the feeling that, by making this film, we were carrying out a real revolution.”
