After President Claus Vogt (54) was voted out as chairman of the supervisory board at VfB Stuttgart, ex-politician Tanja Gönner (54) will be the first woman to head the traditional club in the future.
This has never happened before in the Bundesliga. Only second division team St. Pauli also has a supervisory board chairwoman, Sandra Schwedler.
Gönner, who has been a member of the eleven-member committee since September 2022, has had a long career in politics: from 2002 to 2004 she sat for the CDU in the Bundestag and was Social, Environment and Transport Minister of the state of Baden-Württemberg from 2004 and 2011 . Today Gönner is the managing director of the Federation of German Industries (BDI).

Regarding her election as the new chairwoman of the supervisory board, she says: “I am pleased about the great trust and the new challenge. I assure all members that I will represent the interests of the association in all important decisions in close communication with them. I attach great importance to intensive cooperation with the Presidium and the Board of Directors.”

After her predecessor Vogt was accused of, among other things, a lack of decision-making ability, little competence and poor internal and external communication during his term as chairman of the supervisory board (2017-2024), things are now supposed to get better under Gönner.
When BILD asked whether he trusted patrons to hold the top office, VfB advisor Philipp Lahm (40) said: “I don’t know them enough to be able to judge that. Others will have judged this and I trust these people. It’s completely normal in football that there are always changes in a club. VfB’s goal must be to no longer have the same problems as we did in the medium to long term.”
That would also be a treat for patrons…
