Ex-BVB star Alex Frei (44) has terminated his contract with FC Aarau, which runs until 2025, with immediate effect!

Frei in a club statement: “In the last few weeks and months I realized that I no longer have the strength and energy to fully pursue my passion as a coach.”

Frei took over the club in the summer of 2023. With ten wins from 26 games, he led the Aargauers to third place in the Challenge League. He previously coached FC Basel, among others. “I will always remember the great moments with our team,” said Frei.

The 44-year-old was also a footballer himself. Stormed for Borussia Dortmund from around 2006 to 2009. In 83 competitive games for BVB he scored 37 goals and prepared 20. Frei then moved back from Dortmund to FC Basel, where he ended his active career in 2013. He is currently still the Swiss national team’s record goalscorer (42 goals in 84 games).
Frei’s previous assistant Norbert Fischer (46) will initially take over as interim coach at FC Aarau, but he does not have the necessary license. That’s why talent manager Ranko Jakovljevic (57) is listed as the official head coach.
A successor will not come until next season. According to the Swiss portal “4-4-2”, Michel Renggli (44) is a possible candidate. He is currently training the U21 team at FC Luzern.
